Horror hitmaker Blumhouse Productions this week launched a gaming division.
As part of a longer-term effort to branch out into interactive media, the new Blumhouse Games plans to publish original titles for PC, consoles, and mobile devices.
Led by veteran video-game producer Zach Wood as president and ex-PlayStation exec Don Sechler as CFO, the division will partner with independent developers to produce horror-themed games with budgets under $10 million.
"For some time we have been looking to build out a team to start accessing the growth opportunity in interactive media," Blumhouse President Abhijay Prakash tells Variety(Opens in a new window). "With their experience, sensibility, and knowledge of the gaming marketplace, Zach and Don are the ideal leaders to leverage Blumhouse's unique genre strengths into gaming."
While the horror and genre indie game space isn't exactly empty, Wood, who's published titles on every platform from Game Boy to Xbox over more than 25 years, says there is a "unique opportunity" to build on the existing inventory. "I'm thrilled about teaming up with Blumhouse to meaningfully leverage the company's brand, reputation, and creative talent," he said.
Exactly what that will yield remains to be seen; the studio has yet to reveal specific projects or a projected timeline. Blumhouse, best known for producing horror hits like M3GAN and Get Out, did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.
"We're in the scary story business," Prakash tells Bloomberg(Opens in a new window). "We do films, we do TV, and there is this massive, growing segment in media and entertainment called gaming. The space is hundreds of billions of dollars; we're in a great position to try and access it."
