The Last of Us finale premiered this past weekend on HBO, containing more hidden cameos tailor-made for fans of the video games. Yet for actress Melanie Lynskey, one appearance earlier in the series was more special, as it involved shooting her husband.
Lynskey starred in two episodes ofThe Last of Us, entries 4 and 5, playing Kathleen Coghlan, a resistance leader in Kansas City who complicates Joel and Ellie's passing through the area in her quest to avenge her brother’s death by killing Henry. Kathleen was a completely original character added to the series by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, though the chain of events that led to her demise ultimately does recreate scenes from the game.

This was the scene where the New Zealander worked with her spouse on The Last of Us set. In this case, her partner Jason Ritter doubled as one of the Clickers that emerge from the ground right when Kathleen wants to shoot Henry, Sam, and Ellie. Lynskey described the Last of Us scene on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, even bringing with her a cute picture of Ritter landing a kiss on her cheek wearing that icky infected makeup.
Lynskey mentioned that Ritter, an accomplished actor in his own right, worked hard to train with The Last of Us' stunt crew to become a Clicker. Considering the scale of the scene, it’s obvious why director Jeremy Webb needed as many bodies as possible. It was The Last of Us episode 5, «Endure and Survive,» where fans were treated to the show’s reveal of its Bloater, and thus one of the biggest action sequences in season 1.
