HBO’s first season of The Last of Us has officially ended, and now fans are eagerly looking towards the show’s second season. However, this means that the controversial The Last of Us Part 2 will be brought back to the forefront of the conversation. In a new interview, Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann was asked about the negativity of the game, and if he anticipates the same reaction from viewers to the show. Turns out, he really doesn’t care anymore.
In an interview with GQ, Druckmann and showrunner Craig Mazin discussed the first season’s ending and their plans for season two. With the first season doing a tremendous job of sticking to its source material, many are wondering if the second season will follow the same path for Part 2. And even if they couldn't give us specifics, Druckmann revealed that he's certainly not backing down from controversial story beats just because some fans didn't like them.

In the interview, the duo are asked if they are anticipating the same kind of negative reaction that the game received. Speaking rather candidly, Druckmann admits that he doesn’t care if you hate it or not.
“I don't care. How they react is how they react, that is completely outside of our control," says Druckmann. "So how do we make the best TV show version of that story? That's the problem that we wrestle with every day.”
If you lived under a rock during 2020, you may have missed the divide that The Last of Us Part 2 created amongst fans. It got particularly bad with the game’s creators and several of the actors, as they received a barrage of hate and death threats online. Still, the game went on to win over 300 Game of the Year awards and other accolades.
