PlayStation is giving refunds to anyone who pre-ordered The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered for full price despite being eligible for the $10 upgrade path.
After years of rumours of a "director's cut" for The Last of Us Part 2, today marks the launch of the Remastered version of the game, which is essentially that but with a slight boost to the visuals and a bunch of extra content like a new roguelite survival mode called No Return. Although there's a lot on offer here, it seems that PlayStation wanted to avoid the grief it got for charging full price for The Last of Us Part 1, as it's got a cheaper upgrade path in mind for this remaster.
If you own The Last of Us Part 2, then you can upgrade to The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered for only $10, which isn't a big ask considering everything that's been added to the game. Although PlayStation has advertised this cheaper upgrade path since the remaster was officially revealed, it seems that a lot of players who are eligible for the upgrade weren't aware of it and have still gone ahead and pre-ordered the remaster at full price.
Although you'd think that PlayStation might just ignore these accidental pre-orders and let them go through, it's actually done the opposite. As shown off by Redditor farrerj32 on the Gaming subreddit and confirmed by other players on The Last of Us subreddit, PlayStation has sent messages to anyone who pre-ordered the game without knowing that they could just upgrade.
The message tells players that their pre-order for the digital version of the game has been refunded so that they don't lose out on the opportunity to buy the game for a discounted price, something that PlayStation calls a "gesture of goodwill".
"As an owner of the PS4 digital version of The Last of Us Part 2, a digital upgrade to the PS5 digital version will be available at a deeply discounted price on launch day. We didn't want you to lose out on the opportunity so, as a gesture of goodwill, we have refunded your purchase".
