The Sonic the Hedgehog series is turning 33 this year. Despite this, Sonic the Hedgehog, the character, has always been 15, even if we have seen him celebrate his birthday before.
However, the film series might be taking a completely different route. As spotted by fans, the trailer for the Knuckles spin-off series seems to show Sonic looking a lot taller, suggesting that he and the rest of the gang might finally age, at least in this timeline.
The difference between the Sonic models used in the film series and the Paramount Plus spinoff show becomes even more apparent when you look at them side by side. It's not clear if this was done on purpose, but it does give off the impression that this Sonic timeline is actually moving forward, rather than being all over the place like the games.
Considering the timeline of events here, this would make a lot of sense. Knuckles is right in between the second and third Sonic movies, with the next film set to bring us into the Sonic Adventure era. In the game series, Sonic Adventure saw many of the characters get the redesigns they're still using to this day, being the first game to introduce what we would now call "Modern Sonic". So, to reflect this in the film series, it looks like Sonic will be getting a little taller, which makes sense since he's up against Shadow now, who never appeared in the classic games.
Much of the canon has been changed for the films already, so showing the gang get older with each instalment wouldn't be a huge surprise. Plus, it makes a bit more sense than the games showing Sonic grow a few feet in height between two games. This only gets more confusing when you realise that Classic Sonic is still knocking about in his own timeline, thanks to Sonic Mania and Superstars.
Lore confusion aside, it's going to be a packed year for Sonic fans. Not only are we getting Knuckles and Sonic 3, we also have a new game on the way - Sonic x Shadow Generations. As the name suggests, this is a remake of the original
