Spirit Warrior Studio recently announced that their new game, Pongo17, is available on Google Play. Based on the original 1972 Pong, this game has received a massive overhaul in terms of looks and gameplay. First of all, there’s some actual lore. How do you add lore to a simple ping-pong game? By making it about Nature and Chaos. According to Pongo17’s portfolio website, “The players represent goddesses “Nature” (Midori) and “Chaos” (Kuroyuri).” Both sides are tasked with protecting a crystal from getting hit by the ball. However, there’s more to the game than just knocking a ball back and forth.
Players can collect power-ups for the ball and the paddles as they play. Additionally, the power-ups come in a variety of colors. Red will decrease the paddle speed while yellow doubles it. Green activates a defense to temporarily protect your crystal, and purple cancels abilities for a short time. Also, the game’s controls are simple and straightforward. There are two options for moving the paddle: Static and Dynamic. Static mode divides your screen in half horizontally which allows you to play with two fingers. Dynamic, however, is for swiping a full screen with one finger. Clearly Spirit Warrior Studio put a lot of thought into making Pongo17 more than just another ping-pong game.
The game is still very new in terms of Google Play standards. It only has a little over 50 downloads and no reviews yet. A plus is that, while not free, it’s one of the cheaper mobile games out there at $2.99. If you’re curious about a more visually appealing version of videogame ping-pong, Pongo17 might just be for you. Be on the lookout for a review from Hardcore Droid!
