Newly Released PS5, Switch, and Xbox Game is Getting Rave Reviews
The newly-released Unicorn Overlord, available for Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X, has launched to rave reviews from critics. Unicorn Overlord is the latest game from Vanillaware, a developer that is no stranger to critical acclaim.
Many titles developed by Vanillaware have been released to mostly positive reviews from fans and critics alike. The PlayStation 2 classics GrimGrimoire and Odin Sphere are both highly-regarded games, as are Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Dragon's Crown, and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. Considering Vanillaware's track record, many fans have been hotly anticipating its next game, and it seems Unicorn Overlord has lived up to the hype.
The reviews are in for Unicorn Overlord and, according to review aggregate site OpenCritic, its current overall score sits at 88. It's possible that Unicorn Overlord's overall review score will change as more reviews are counted, but it's unlikely to go too far in either direction. Critics have heaped praise on the game for its striking art style and tactical combat, though some have criticized the story as not living up to the high standards set by the rest of the game. Unicorn Overlord is currently available for Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X, so anyone interested has a lot of options to choose from if they decide to play the game, though a PC version doesn't exist at the time of this writing.
Unicorn Overlord's high review scores make it one of the highest-rated new game releases of 2024 so far, but a handful of titles have it beat. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's review scores were high enough to make it the current highest-rated game of the year with a 93 overall rating. Surprise indie hit Balatro is right behind it with a 92 rating, with Tekken 8 and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth both earning 90 ratings as well. Counting The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, five games have managed to get a 90 or above rating in 2024 so far. This is a remarkable feat considering we're only a few months into 2024.
