AMD is not abandoning the AM4 socket yet, as sources claim that the tech giant is working on a Ryzen 5000XT refresh for its last-gen CPU lineup. This refresh is the first by AMD in a few years, as the Ryzen 3000XT series saw slight increases for Zen 2 processors at similar price points to their non-XT branded counterparts.
Earlier in 2024, AMD released new Zen 3 CPUs for the AM4 socket, which indicated that the company is not done with the older platform. These new CPUs include additions such as the AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D, which is cheaper but less powerful than the highly rated Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU. While the AM4 platform does not have access to newer technologies such as DDR5 RAM or PCIe generation 5 slots, the platform uses DDR4 RAM and has a cheaper price point for first-time PC builders to consider. It remains to be seen when AMD will release further details about the Ryzen 5000XT CPU refresh.
However, the news surrounding the AMD Ryzen 5000XT series lines up with the company's market strategy. According to Wccftech, sources stated that AMD confirmed during the AI PC summit in Beijing that it is working on the Ryzen 5000XT CPU refresh. However, the company did not disclose specifications or release windows for the new processors. The development of the Ryzen 5000XT processors is part of AMD's ongoing strategy to target as many price points as possible in the CPU market and regain some market share it lost to Intel over time. Though the AM4 socket has been succeeded by the AM5 platform used by the Ryzen 7000 and 8000 series, AM4 motherboards are still widely available at lower prices for consumers to consider.
The last time AMD released an XT-branded CPU lineup was in 2020. The Ryzen 3000 series of CPUs received variants such as the Ryzen 7 3800XT, which offered only an increase of 200 MHz of boosted clock speeds compared to the Ryzen 7 3800X. However, both the 3800X and 3800XT processors had launch prices of $399 in 2019 and 2020 respectively. While it is not known
