People tend to push the limits of their new gadgets. So it shouldn't be surprising to see videos popping up of people using the Meta Quest 3 outside. While this may sound like a turbo-charged version of Pokémon Go, it's a terrible idea.
The Meta Quest 3 is a more robust Mixed Reality (MR) set than its predecessors. Thanks to color passthrough that actually works (sorry, Quest Pro) and a new depth sensor that does an excellent job of automatically scanning your surroundings, it's feasible to wear it all around your home. You won't have to worry about tripping on the couch, the dog, or falling down the stairs.
But it didn't take long for people to start pushing the virtual and physical boundaries of the Meta Quest 3. You can already find videos of people wearing a Quest 3 in coffee shops, comic book conventions, and, yes, playing games outside. But you shouldn't do any of that.
Strapping on a headset and firing up a VR game in public is a good way to annoy everyone around you. Not to mention, you'll look pretty silly. As PCMag's VR expert Will Greenwald tells me, "the Quest 3 is an amazing headset, and I can confirm that the color passthrough cameras are good enough to actually visually navigate, but let's be real: You will look like a jackass.
"Remember Google Glass? That was just a little block thingie you put over one eye, and it made everyone paranoid you were recording them and think you were a dork. This is so much worse. Like you're a weird robot triclops stomping around," he adds.
The few games that exist for Meta Quest 3 are best enjoyed at home, and MR apps are a stationary affair, like connecting to your desktop over a high-speed Wi-Fi connection. That's not ideal for a coffee shop.
