In the full year financial report for 2023-2024, the Embracer Group revealed that Alone in the Dark sales were underwhelming. The same was said about Outcast: A New Beginning.
Net sales in the last quarter were down 10% year-over-year, largely due to the lower than expected performance of these two games:
In Q4, results were also impacted by a softer-than-expected performance for the two titles Alone in the Dark and Outcast: A New Beginning, developed and published by THQ Nordic.
Alone in the Dark and Outcast: A New Beginning both saw a positive reception from users, but a mixed reception from critics and ultimately performed below management expectations.
On Wccftech, the Alone in the Dark reboot starring Jodie Comer and David Harbour earned a 7 out of 10 from Nate Birch:
Despite my complaints, I have to admit, I still enjoyed this new Alone in the Dark overall. Maybe I’m just a sucker for that old-school survival horror feel, or maybe Alone in the Dark’s faults just didn’t sink in too deeply as no one section of the game sticks around all that long. Your first time through the game will take around 7 or 8 hours, although multiple playthroughs are encouraged in a number of ways. As mentioned, Edward and Emily’s stories aren’t that different, but a variety of collectibles, secrets, and unlockable endings will keep some happily in the dark for a while, although others may feel the urge to flick on the light switch before they collect everything.
Outcast: A New Beginning fared far worse (5.5) in Francesco De Meo's review, though:
Outcast - A New Beginning is a missed opportunity, abandoning the unique elements of its predecessor for a conventional open-world design that doesn't work well. With uninspired open-world exploration, clunky movement, lackluster combat, and mediocre quest design, it's a hard sell for everyone but Cutter Slade's biggest fans who wish to know how the character's story
