Secret agent Joanna Dark is back in Perfect Dark, a reboot of Rare’s fan favorite first person shooter series. The series originated on the Nintendo 64, but continued on as an Xbox IP after Microsoft’s acquisition of Rare in 2002.
There hasn’t been a new entry in the Perfect Dark series since the last title released on the Xbox 360 in 2010, but at this year’s Xbox Games Showcase, players got a look at gameplay of the reboot, which is currently in development at The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics.
The game is set in Cairo sometime in the ‘near-future’ and Microsoft is calling it a ‘first person secret agent thriller’ and players new to the franchise won’t require knowledge of the original games to understand the story.
On the gameplay side, the trailer featured parkour both in and out of combat, a variety of gadgets, and a mix of melee, gunplay, and stealth.
Interestingly, the development team noted that Perfect Dark “doesn’t want to feel like any one genre, it takes elements of first-person shooters, immersive sims, and stealth-action, but blends them into a seamless whole.”
No release date (or window) has been set just yet, but we expect Perfect Dark to arrive on PC and Xbox Series X|S at the very least.
