NetherRealm Studios is currently working on the new video game, set to be released later in 2023, and although there have not been any official trailers yet, that has not prevented fans from excitedly speculating on characters. While hopefully more information will be made available soon, until then fans have only cryptic tweets from the series' co-creator Ed Boon to give them information on what and who will be in the game. The ending of left things on a bit of a cliffhanger and many fans are now wondering which of the endings will be made canon moving forward.

Presuming that the «good» ending is what will be canonical moving forward in the series, then Liu Kang and Kung Lau are essentially guaranteed. This is dependent on a lot of choices that NetherRealm studios could make, however, and if the «bad» ending or some merged alternate ending from is used instead, then the direction that the series takes could be a complete surprise to fans.
