The world is an island, small and surrounded by an endless sea. While the ocean could be a spectacular but boring stretch of infinite blue, the occasional ruin falling from the sky livens up the waters and frequently hold treasures for adventurers to scavenge. The treasures are usually trinkets and artifacts, but the latest one held, for the first time, a person inside. The tiny fairy Noi just needs a little help retrieving a stolen possession and that’s all the call to adventure Nayuta needs, setting off on an action-RPG through multiple worlds and their changing seasons.
The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails is a spinoff story from the Trails series, although it’s hard to tell just how it’s connected to the other games. Originally released for the PSP back in 2012, an upgraded version was released in Japan a couple of years ago for PS4 and PC. (You can actually pick up one of two versions on Steam right now, one Japanese and the other Chinese and Korean.) The English version was shown at PAX East recently and I got to play a few minutes, and found it to be the kind of action RPG you can feel nostalgic for even while playing for the first time. Today’s trailer gives a September 19 release date plus a good overview of the action ahead, although for some reason it also calls the game a “story action RPG; a new genre that combines an epic story with exhilarating and dynamic action” as if Crystalis, Landstalker, Popful Mail, Alundra, Brave Fencer Musashi, Threads of Fate, and countless others hadn’t come before it. Moving past that, Nayuta is looking to be a really fun throwback with appealing characters in an interesting world, and something to look forward to once summer wraps up.
