Eagle-eyed Tekken 8 fans have noticed a cheeky reference to Christie Monteiro in the Eddy Gordo gameplay trailer, which has raised some questions about what has happened to her.
We've known for some time now that Tekken 8's already fantastic roster was going to be made even better thanks to the return of Eddy Gordo as the first DLC character but, after months of waiting, we finally got our first proper look at the beloved Capoeira master yesterday. As well as seeing a mixture of new and classic moves, the gameplay trailer also held a very interesting detail for long-time Tekken fans.
Right at the start of the trailer, Eddy can be seen playing a berimbau (a musical bow that is commonly used in Brazil) as part of one of his character introductions. After he finishes playing, Eddy points the instrument towards a mystery opponent, which reveals that it has a purple bit of fabric tied to it with two small crystal balls hanging from it.
As pointed out by Twitter user Tzi10 and many other Tekken fans since the trailer dropped, that ribbon and those balls actually belong to Christie Monteiro, and could be seen attached to her fighting trousers in almost all of her appearances in the series. Why Eddy Gordo suddenly has a random part of her clothing is a mystery, but it's got some fans a little worried.
Some fans have speculated that after Christie found Eddy in Tekken 6, she simply retired from fighting (which would explain why she's not been seen in so long) and that she gifted Eddy her ribbon and pearls as a good luck charm. Others have guessed that the berimbau that Eddy is using in the trailer is somehow linked to her, either being a present or something she used to own.
Christie being referenced as part of Eddy Gordo's introductions does make a lot of sense considering how closely the two are linked. Not only do they canonically have a very close relationship, but they also have the same moveset and both represent Brazil.
