The critically acclaimed director joined this Netflix project in 2023, which is based on the classic book series The Chronicles of Narnia written by C. S. Lewis. Gerwig’s Narnia project is reported to have a big budget and the cast has yet to be revealed.
According to a report by Puck News, Greta Gerwig’s Narnia has a release date set in 2026 as part of her deal with Netflix.
Matthew Bellon, who is the founding partner of Puck News, disclosed that the co-CEO of Netflix, Ted Sarandos, decided to give Gerwig’s Narnia a theatrical release. He stated, “Netflix tells me the film will hit about 1,000 IMAX screens worldwide on Thanksgiving Day 2026 and will not appear on Netflix until Christmas.”
Although the report further stated that the movie will play on IMAX for just two weeks, this duration might increase based on popular demand. Additionally, after completing its run on IMAX screens, Greta Gerwig’s Narnia will also hit regular non-IMAX theaters before ultimately streaming on Netflix. This will provide the movie with four weeks in theaters.
Furthermore, this revolutionary deal between Gerwig and Netflix has given Narnia a chance to open in theaters in 90 countries. Similar to Netflix’s other projects like Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and The Irishman, Gerwig’s Narnia movie will have a traditional theatrical release first rather than a streaming debut.
In February 2024, Gerwig sat down for a conversation with Collider and revealed she had been working on the Narnia movie before Barbie started shooting. She said, “Knowing that I’d laid the groundwork for Narnia and wanted to return to it—that’s probably something I set up for myself psychologically. Because I know the right thing, for me anyway, is to keep making movies.”
