Since its debut, Game Pass has been seen by some as a double edged sword for developers, since they can easily offer their new title to a larger audience of players that may not have checked it out otherwise, but those players may not go on to purchase the full product even after the game departs from the subscription service’s library, leading to less overall game sales.
Now, that cautionary aspect of Game Pass may not have quite the merit it seemed, as Circana has released their charts for the best-selling software of September 2023. Sitting at the top is Bethesda’s long-awaited sci-fi RPG Starfield, which, despite releasing day one on Game Pass on both Xbox and PC, has still managed to outsell every other game during that month. The two titles right below it are also new releases for September, with Mortal Kombat 1 arriving in second and EA Sports FC 24 coming in third. The full top ten list includes three more fresh September debuts: Payday 3 at fifth, NBA 2K24 at sixth (without any digital sales included) and The Crew Motorfest at seventh. Meanwhile, the two best-selling games of the previous month, Madden NFL 24 and Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, remained strong by showing up at fourth and eighth respectively.
As for the best-selling games of 2023 so far, the top six remain largely unchained, with Hogwarts Legacy and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom still claiming the first two spots. However, Madden NFL 24 has jumped from sixth to third after its second month of sales, and two newcomers have entered the top ten: Starfield in seventh and Mortal Kombat 1 in eighth.
