Nintendo Japan will soon stop repairing Wii U consoles and peripherals
Nintendo Japan has announced that it will soon end all repairs on Wii U and its peripherals, including the Wii U Gamepad.
Since the console is now over ten years old and Nintendo’s warranty period has passed, the company said on Tuesday it will now only repair consoles until its current parts stock runs out.
“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to Wii U users, and appreciate your understanding,” it said. “If you are considering repairing the Wii U console or peripherals, please apply as soon as possible.”
Nintendo began winding down its support for Wii U earlier this year, when it closed down the Wii U and 3DS eShops, making it impossible to buy digital games on either system.
The ability to redeem prepaid eShop cards that add funds to the player’s eShop balance was already stopped in August 2022.
As revealed by VGC analysis, around 1000 digital-only eShop games have effectively disappeared for good now that 3DS and Wii U eShop transactions have ended.
The closure of the Wii U and 3DS eShops also meant the end of the Virtual Console service. Now the only retro games provided by Nintendo are those available on Switch Online’s various apps.
