The last new title for Dragon Quest Monsters launched exclusively in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS. After that the only title released since then was a port of the first Dragon Quest Monsters on Nintendo Switch but once again it was exclusively for Japan. The series has always had a bit of a rocky history with regular comparisons to the likes of Pokemon and Digimon despite the Dragon Quest series being an earlier adopter to the monster training dynamic. It’s been a fan favorite among new and returning Dragon Quest fans alike as it flipped things on its head and instead of making monsters entirely enemies they can become powerful allies that can in turn be bred to create even stronger friends to use in battle. In celebrating the spin-offs 25 anniversary Square Enix shared a celebratory video and an announcement for an entirely new title in the works.
Previously fans thought that last year’s Dragon Quest Treasures was going to be the next title in the series. Although this title did contain it’s own version of taming the wild monsters around the world, the roster of available creatures was quite limited and very much more focused on action combat in favor of the more traditional turn-based style that Monsters was known for. It was still a wonderfully charming title that offered a new perspective on taming beast companions but it didn’t quite scratch that epic rpg-scale itch that Dragon Quest Monsters managed to readily fulfill. The biggest question now is whether or not the next Dragon Quest Monsters will be a spin-off of another mainline game as many of the entries have featured characters from the main numbered titles as protagonists in Monsters.
