Towards the end of Insomniac’s first Spider-Man game, clues were dropped into the story that showed that Peter Parker may not be the only web-swinging hero in New York City for too long, after his new friend Miles Morales gets bitten by a radioactive spider.
After Miles shares his newfound powers with Peter, Peter also reveals his spider-like abilities and begins to mentor Miles throughout the events of The City That Never Sleeps DLC. When Peter has to join his girlfriend Mary Jane in an investigation in Symkaria, Miles is left as the only Spider-Man remaining in New York City, as the younger hero got his own chance to shine in the spinoff title Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Even before the first teaser dropped for the inevitable sequel, many fans had already been speculating that a new Spider-Man game would give players the chance to control both heroes.
As such, it came as no surprise when partway through the first gameplay demo for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 after Peter’s brutal beatdown courtesy of his newfound Symbiote powers, a prompt appeared on screen allowing players to continue the events of that mission as Miles with a simple press of a button, immediately transporting us to a different part of the city. The remainder of the mission continued to swap between Peter and Miles as appropriate, giving fans a taste of how they can expect story missions to utilize both characters. But questions still remained regarding if or how players can switch between characters out in the open world, as Insomniac’s last game that sported multiple playable protagonists, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, restricted whether you were able to play as Ratchet or Rivet based on which planet you were currently exploring.
