John Carpenter, at least in the mind of this writer, shall always be known as one of the great auteurs of the 1980s, a writer, director, composer and more behind such classic cult genre films as The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, Escape From New York, and many more. In recent years, though, he has also revealed himself to be an avid gamer as well, someone who enjoys a lot that current video games can offer. This has led some to wonder “Wait, then why isn’t John Carpenter working on anything in gaming? That seems like a wasted opportunity!” Well, Carpenter, Focus Entertainment, and developers Saber Interactive have listened, and thus we have the reveal of John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, straight from Summer Game Fest.
If you need any proof that this is a John Carpenter game, then note the opening to the reveal trailer below, which features the titular Toxic Commandos, a ragtag bunch, driving towards a job, ready to ram into a ravenous mutant. Is it set to a moody cover song? Screw that, we get Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name” blaring on the soundtrack as our heroes sing the chorus before we segue to a ton of FPS action as our heroes blow away hordes and hordes of mutants, thanks to Saber’s Swarm Engine, as seen in World War Z: Aftermath. The mutants are a result of an attempt to harness the power of the Earth’s core resulting in the release of an eldritch abomination known as the Sludge God and his army.
