No matter what fandom you’re in, one universal thing is always hard to do when you know something is coming out soon: waiting. Waiting is the hardest part because you want to hear a release date, and once that release date is announced, you want it to get here as quickly as possible so you can enjoy your movie, show, comic, or video game. Regarding Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, fans have been waiting for definitive news of a release date for almost two years. So why is it that Insomniac Games haven’t given one yet?
That question was personified via the gameplay trailer that was released at the recent PlayStation Showcase. The trailer was over ten minutes long and featured both a cinematic trailer featuring Kraven the Hunter and a gameplay trailer showing Peter Parker and Miles Morales in action. Yet, when the trailer ended, all we got was a “2023” indicator that the game was coming this year, and that’s it.
Enter Creative director Bryan Intihar, who has been making the rounds after that gameplay trailer to talk about the title, its gameplay, and, yes, its release date. He noted to The Washington Post that a release date isn’t out yet for a simple reason: they want to ensure they hit the release date!
“It’s really just making sure that we’re really confident that when we announce the date, we’re going to hit it,” said Intihar. “It’s really just about that.”
That might sound like a basic answer, but when you look at recent video game history, you’ll see why that’s important. Over the last several years, numerous titles by various developers have announced release dates, and then they’re delayed. Or, just as bad, they rush to meet those release dates and then release their titles in a broken state.
