2K Games has laid off yet another round of staff, but this time, we have no idea on how many were actually affected this time around.
This is the studio behind several large titles that fans know and love such as the NBA 2K games, Bioshock, and New Tales from the Borderlands. In a post on LinkedIn, Art Manager Brad Bowling stated,
“I have had a great time over the past couple of years working with some of the finest Game Devs in the industry. Over the past 23 years of making game art, I have seen some downturns but nothing like this.”
— Brad Bowling, LinkedIn
Bowling was amongst those let go from Visual Concepts Austin, which is under the 2K umbrella, which is the second layoff spurt in less than six months. Late last year, Visual Concepts laid off another unknown number of developers from several different departments, including their Executive Producer Joseph Cowan according to GameSpot.
This also isn’t just Visual Concepts experiencing the layoffs from 2K games, several other studios within the 2K umbrella have been laid off over the last few years. This seems to be a trend among the entire gaming industry as well, not just 2K, as we have seen layoffs from Microsoft after they laid off over 1900 Activision Blizzard employees in January of this year.
There are many examples of layoffs within the development and gaming industry within the last few months, but hopefully we start to see more of an uptrend on jobs rather than downsizing in the years to come.
