Final Fantasy VII REBIRTH, the second installment in the REMAKE project trilogy, has been released on PlayStation 5 today, letting players experience the timeless story in a new way. The RPG has also reached critical acclaim since reviews went live last week.
Final Fantasy VII REBIRTH picks up right after the events of 2020's Final Fantasy VII REMAKE and takes its players through the events that closed out the first disc of the original release. REBIRTH brings new elements to the RPG, including its new weapon folios skill system, an expanded synergy combat system, and tons of mini-games.
Maybe there are too many mini-games if that's a thing.
Since reviews went live last week (including ours), Final Fantasy VII REBIRTH has reached critical acclaim, sitting at a 92 Critic score as of the writing of this article — one of the best-reviewed games of 2024 thus far (in fact, the highest on the list as of today).
We thoroughly enjoyed our nearly 80 hours in REBIRTH for our review, calling Square Enix's reimaging of this iconic RPG story a «modern RPG masterpiece.» Its story and characters are as compelling today as they were 27 years ago when the RPG originally launched, though the game isn't without some modern flaws. As much as I love a good mini-game, there seriously might have been too many, while the visuals do suffer a bit, especially when playing in its 60fps Performance Mode.
Currently Final Fantasy VII REBIRTH is only available on PlayStation 5 as of right now, but given REMAKE made its way to PC, it stands to reason that PC players won't be waiting forever to get their hands on the RPG. Hopefully the port is better than the last one, though.
