During the latest Campfire, Blizzard mentioned older versions of legendaries and uniques becoming «legacy items.» While this term may seem odd for players new to ARPGs, Legacy Items have some precedence in other ARPG games, so some players may know what to expect. For those who don't, though, here's everything you'll need to know!

Legacy variants of items are well known in other ARPG communities, particularly the Path of Exile community.
Essentially, a Legacy item, or as known in other ARPGs «legacy variants», are older versions of legendary or unique items that have been changed over the years. These could be something like a Unique with an ability change that didn't occur retroactively, or a Legendary Aspect that was completely reworked into a before and after version.
The key thing to remember is that these Legacy items will likely only ever exist on the Eternal realm.
Given that the changes are occurring on a Seasonal refresh, there's no stock of them in inventories of Seasonal characters — meaning that every copy to exist prior to the changes will have already migrated to Eternal. While this technically means fewer options for a Seasonal character to create a build with, it greatly expands the possibilities for an Eternal character — and possibly the cost on some harder to find Legacy items that possibly have more desirable stats for a specific build.
Think of your items as discontinued versions, which will make them incredibly rare and essentially a piece of the game's history, forever immortalized in your stash or character gear setup.
It is important to note that these Legacy items will not be usable with the upcoming crafting system — even when it comes to the Eternal realm.
