As expected, the Resident Evil 4 remake's demo shadow dropped shortly after last night's Capcom presentation. What we didn't expect was the demo to have an ultra-hard difficulty mode that will randomly challenge players at the start of a playthrough.
As shown by Twitter user Ruletime (via GamesRadar), "Mad Chainsaw Mode" will appear at the beginning of a playthrough just before the first cutscene. The screen warns players that it's an "extreme difficulty" mode and then allows them to accept or decline the challenge. Decline and you won't be able to accept the challenge again until subsequent playthroughs. Accept the challenge, and don't expect Resident Evil 4 to give you any quarter.

What's bizarre about Mad Chainsaw Mode is that it appears to offer itself to players totally at random. Some are reporting that they're being offered Mad Chainsaw Mode after their first playthrough, while others report only being offered it on their third or fourth playthrough. The consensus seems to be that it's just random. If you're not offered Mad Chainsaw Mode before the first cutscene, it's recommended that you restart to try and get it to come up.
Another bizarre thing is that Capcom says explicitly this mode is specifically for the demo and won't appear in the final game. Probably because it's so ludicrously difficult that players aren't intended to actually beat the game on Mad Chainsaw Mode. Perhaps this difficulty is actually intended to show the player all the gruesome new ways Leon can die.
