Capcom is reportedly working on a remake of the first Resident Evil game, just in time for the series' 30th anniversary. If it launches in time for the big day, that would make it a 2026 release, meaning we might have a bit of a wait in between remake projects this time around.
This is being claimed by two leakers, including entertainment reporter Daniel Richtman. On his Patreon page, Richtman backs up the claims being made by Twitter user @PRE_Alarabiya, which states that Resident Evil 1 Remake is in the works now, scheduled for 2026.
The leak originates from @PRE_Alarabiya, or Resident Evil Philosophers, the account for a community of Arab Resident Evil fans. Here, they make a range of claims about upcoming Resident Evil projects, including that Capcom is set to go right back to the beginning of the series for its next remake, not forward.
Richtman's statement on the matter is brief, writing on his Patreon: "I also hear a Resident Evil 1 remake is in development."
If true, this means that fans might not get a Resident Evil 5 Remake anytime soon. It was widely assumed that this was what Capcom would work on next, following the huge success of Resident Evil 4 Remake. It even looked like the Separate Ways DLC was teasing Resi 5, but this may not have been the case.
In any case, it's especially bad news for anyone after a remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica. If Capcom ever does get around to remaking this spin-off, then it looks like there could be two other remakes ahead of it now - and that's not even getting into the next mainline instalment.
We'll have to wait to see if Capcom confirms these rumours. We might get some official news soon though, as we rapidly approach the summer showcase season.
