While some reports suggested that the entire Trilogy would be exclusive to the PlayStation 5, that turns out to not be the case. The fact that Square Enix and Sony have an exclusivity deal for the franchise has frustrated many Xbox players who insist the games should also be made available on their console. While the latest release, , won't be played on a Series X|S any time soon, that doesn't mean the remakes won't ever land on Microsoft's consoles.
Following a recent article by which stated that all three games in the Trilogy would be locked to PlayStation consoles, the outlet issued an update confirming that the author made an error. The story was amended to state that the trilogy «i» lending some semblance of hope to fans who happen to own an Xbox device. Even though some players expressed disappointment over the incorrect announcement, it's worth pointing out that is also available on PC.
Square Enix has yet to announce any plans to bring over to other devices but looking at previous games, there may be some indication as to what fans can expect. A year after launched for PlayStation 4, the game came to PC, and while the PlayStation 5 exclusive is also confirmed to launch on PC in the coming months, neither game is available on Xbox. The closest thing fans can look forward to is the long-awaited release of the MMO which is set to hit Xbox Game Pass on March 21.
Now that is in players' hands, Square Enix has confirmed that it has already begun work on the third and final entry into its revered trilogy. The next game will likely tie up the story of Cloud Strife and Sephiroth, and provide players with an opportunity to explore the world map with Highwind, a massive airship. When the final installment will launch remains unknown but given the four-year gap between and, a similar timeline can be expected for the third game in the trilogy.
