Cloud and Tifa are your primary damage dealers, getting up close to the boss and relentlessly taking down its health. Barret works in the same way but focuses more on attacking the Phoenix when it is out of reach of the other two members of your party in .
Don't forget to find new weapons for Cloud in and everyone else in your party before facing this boss. Using different weapons can unlock additional abilities for you to use in battle.
The Phoenix has the ability to summon other enemies during the boss fight, so your selection of Materia needs to account for the weaknesses of multiple foes. The firebird can unsurprisingly absorb fire, making any elemental attacks of that type useless. The Phoenix also has immunity to nearly every status effect in, such as Sleep or Silence that you ordinarily use on basic enemies.
