Every Thursday at 10 am CT, the Epic Games Store rotates its free game selection and confirms what will be coming the next week. This means Epic Games Store users can no longer claim Call of the Wild: The Angler or Invincible Presents: Atom Eve, but they can claim Islets until April 4. At that time, Islets will rotate out of EGS and the service will add The Outer Worlds and Thief, two big pick-ups for the service.
It's worth noting that both of the free Epic Games Store games had leaked, prior to this reveal, per known leaker Billbil-kun. While all rumors and leaks should be taken with a grain of salt, Billbil-kun has accurately leaked PS Plus games, EGS games, Xbox Game Pass games, and more in the past. This means it was not all too surprising to see the games they mentioned, The Outer Worlds on March 27 and Thief shortly before their official reveal, confirmed.
Both games are solid additions and representative of their genre. The Outer Worlds is a sci-fi RPG, one with solid Fallout storytelling vibes, and players are joined by some unique and interesting companions. The edition made free on Epic Games Store, the Spacer's Choice Edition, also includes the game's DLC, improved graphics, and a higher level cap. It's also worth noting that The Outer Worlds was developed by Obsidian Entertainment, which is releasing a similar, but fantasy-based, RPG later this year in Avowed.
Meanwhile, Thief is a stealth game, but not necessarily one comparable to Assassin's Creed for example. Its use of first-person, immersive sim elements, and distinct use of sound and audio (from other stealth games) ensures it stands out quite a bit. It's absolutely worth checking out in that regard, and it also features a dark fantasy setting similar to 19th-century London. It's worth mentioning that Thief launched to middling reviews, but has over the years built up its own cult following.
A companion-based RPG and a stealth game are not going to be for everyone, no matter how wide a net the two
