This terrifying creature uses psychic attacks and magic to rival your characters with no clear weaknesses. Without the right team and items, it can be very difficult to take down this squid-faced threat during your adventure.
The Mindflayer's Crown in is an item you can only get by beating the Mindflayer boss. This reward allows you to craft a powerful Charm that can make a character in your party much stronger for fights in future story Chapters. You can challenge the Mindflayer as many times as you want to farm this item or gain lots of EXP from defeating the creature more than once.
The teammates you should bring into the fight against the Mindflayer are Barret, Tifa, and Aerith for the unique roles each fulfills. Barret can tank a majority of the Mindflayer's attacks and keep pressuring the creature with long-range attacks of his own. On the other hand, Tifa can get in close and build up stagger with her punches while Aerith stays back and offers support through healing magic and other buffs.
Remember to equip at least one Healing or Revival Materia to one of your party members when you can. Emergency healing that comes from a source other than items can help your group when they need to keep fighting.
Any Materia that gives you more actions, like ATB Boost, can be great for this boss fight. Having more opportunities to heal or cast buffs like Haste from the Time Magic Materia in could decide victory or defeat for your party. The Mindflayer isn't weak to any elements, so you're better off bringing Materia that simply improves character traits like MP Up, HP Up, or Precision Defense Focus.
