As you near the end of you face off against Rufus in a 1v1 battle, which provides one of the toughest tests in the game. Boss battles are frequent throughout and are often at key points in the story, such as the final showdown with Sephiroth. Here, you face off against Rufus Shinra at the end of the 12th chapter.
You can only use Cloud for the battle and will need to use everything you have learned on your journey so far to be able to beat him, especially if you are playing on one of the harder difficulty levels. Rufus and his companion Darkstar provided a hard test in, and they do so once again in. Throughout the fight, you will need to use patience and only attack at certain times.
Rufus is immune to all elemental damage, with only standard attacks working against him. Timing is crucial in this battle, and you need to either attack him when he is reloading his gun, or use an ATB Command straight after Rufus has attacked to pressure him.
Like most boss battles in, you need to pressure or stagger your opponent to take any significant health from Rufus.
As well as being immune to a lot of Cloud's offense, Rufus can block and counter many of the basic attacks, making this a fight you want to attack from a distance. One of the most useful attacks in this battle is Focused Thurst, which should be used when Rufus reloads and can potentially pressure or stagger him.
Rufus has a wide range of attacks, most of which can be dodged, but you need to be aware of his Homing Bullets, which can be blocked to avoid taking any damage. Once you get Rufus down to approximately 50% of his health, the second phase of the battle starts as his companion Darkstar joins the arena.
There is a visible blue line connecting Rufus to Darkstar. Every time you break this line, Darkstar will become pressured, allowing you to quickly stagger it.
At this point, you should fully focus all your attacks on Darkstar to eliminate him. Once staggered, you can quickly take health off Darkstar. You need to
