Back in September last year, during a Nintendo Direct stream, the Japanese gaming giant announced that it was developing a remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for Switch. The reveal trailer showed the graphically improved versions of Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and more. While the original game released in 2004 for GameCube, the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake is set to arrive on May 23, 2024 – nearly 20 years later.
On its official YouTube channel, Nintendo has posted the intro cutscene of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake, showcasing the game’s enhanced graphics and animation. The cutscene introduces the player to the game’s setting and its plot, acting as a sort of quick start guide before the actual gameplay kicks off. Notably, the opening clip gives off an impression of a fairytale novel. In the comments section, a majority of fans praised the new look at the remake and expressed feelings of nostalgia. Apart from visual improvements, Nintendo has incorporated some new gameplay features in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake. This information was confirmed in a press release in which the company stated that the remake contains “enhanced graphics as well as new gameplay features.” While it isn’t yet clear what exactly these new additions to gameplay are, revisiting Nintendo’s work on Super Mario RPG remake, fans can expect to see changes such as a fresh inventory system, autosaving, and the like.
