Xiao Luohao, head of the writing team for Genshin Impact, revealed in a recent interview that some of the unanswered plot points from Sumeru are, in fact, future content. Though the main appeal of Genshin Impact has always been its colorful cast of characters, fans also fell in love with the world of Teyvat and its lore. The format of annually traveling to different nations during the player's journey has allowed the developers to cleverly pace out the flow of content, and design character banners focused around each region of Teyvat.
With Signora's fate sealed during the finale of the Inazuma Archon Quests, the next Chapter was supposed to take players to the scholarly land of Sumeru. However, much to the community's surprise, HoYoverse teased the region with a story trailer featuring the Fatui Harbingers, and hinting towards the role that Scaramouche and Dottore would play in Sumeru. Whereas Scaramouche ended up becoming the Wanderer in Genshin Impact, Dottore's storyline still leaves a lot of plot points unresolved.
Over the course of the Sumeru Archon Quests, players receive visions of the future, with one of the possible futures depicting Irminsul in flames – burned by Dottore. As demonstrated by the final fates of Wanderer and Nahida's predecessor, Irminsul is a tree that holds all the collective knowledge of Teyvat, and deleting information from Irminsul can permanently remove a person's existence from the pages of history and memory. The dark future of Irminsul never came to pass, and a seemingly satisfied Dottore left Sumeru with his prize. However, according to Xiao Luohao and shared by hxg_diluc, this is upcoming story content in Genshin Impact that simply hasn't happened yet.
