A well-known insider has shared some new details about Metaphor: ReFantazio. Their information emerged online just ahead of Atlus's next Metaphor: ReFantazio preview event.
June 12 will mark the first anniversary of Metaphor: ReFantazio's reveal. First teased in 2016 under the «Project Re Fantasy» codename, the upcoming RPG is set to debut as Atlus's first original IP in more than a decade. The developer previously revealed that the game is targeting a fall 2024 launch, but no firm release date has yet been shared.
In the meantime, prominent Sega leaker Midori has now taken to Twitter to reveal some additional details about the upcoming RPG. Among other things, the leaker claimed that Metaphor: ReFantazio is built with an «updated version» of the Persona 5 engine. That would be GFD, Atlus's internal engine that's also been used for Catherine: Full Body and the Persona dancing game spin-offs, among other projects. Although the developer has recently been moving to third-party solutions like Unity (Persona 5 Tactica) and Unreal Engine (Persona 3 Reload), the possibility of Metaphor sticking with GFD tracks with the fact that Atlus Studio Zero's only other game to date, the Catherine re-release, was also built using the same engine.
Midori has also asserted that Metaphor: ReFantazio will be treated to «various DLC» following its market debut. Atlus fans won't find this claim particularly surprising, not least because the company's games have long been receiving post-launch content. Based on its recent track record, it is plausible that Atlus won't announce the RPG's DLC plans prior to its release. Taking Midori's claim of «various» post-launch content being in the works at face value, Atlus may even end up doing an expansion pass reminiscent of the one Persona 3 Reload is getting.
This bit of unofficial insight into the fantasy RPG arrived just ahead of the next Metaphor: ReFantazio livestream event, which is scheduled for Monday, April 22, at 3pm PT / 6pm ET / 12am
