It's always sad to see a well-liked game completely shut down, especially when it was still being enjoyed by a handful of dedicated fans. That's exactly what happened with The Crew, an open world racing game that was released all the way back in 2015. Being a completely online title, once developer Ubisoft pulled the plug on the game's servers at the end of last month, it became completely unplayable for all owners.
It's essentially a useless game at the moment, but we should know by now that modders will always pick up where official developers leave off, and The Crew's current state hasn't stopped some dedicated fans from trying to get it up and running again. The Crew Unlimited is a group of players trying to make the game playable once again by taking it offline, removing the need for Ubisoft's servers and giving the title a new lease of life on PC.
With almost 5,500 people on The Crew Unlimited's official Discord channel, there are more than enough dedicated and talented people to achieve their rather ambitious goals. Progress is slow-going, which is understandable - since getting The Crew to play offline will be no small feat given how embedded certain online features were - but a milestone was recently reached.
Earlier this week, The Crew Unlimited team member Chemical posted to the Discord channel a simple screenshot of the game's brightness settings, letting others know that The Crew's main menu is once again accessible. It may not seem like the most substantial update, but it's a heck of a lot better than not even being able to boot up the game at all.
This is especially big news since it was recently reported that Ubisoft has been revoking copies of The Crew from Ubisoft Connect accounts, despite people having bought the game with their own money.
