If you were hoping to play the new chapters of Deltarune any time soon, well, you're going to have to wait a bit longer. They're coming but, according to famed indie creator Toby Fox, "the release is still quite far".
In case you've lost track, Deltarune, which is an anagram for Undertale -- Fox's other creation, has had chapters come out at a rather slow albeit unique pace. The first chapter, which released for free, came out all the way back in 2018. A few years later, in 2021, Chapter 2 was released, also for free.
However, since then, fans have been patiently waiting for what lies beyond those first two epsiodes. That is Chapter 3, 4 and 5, all of which are in development at the same time.
In a newsletter posted to his official website, Fox outlined the progress he and his team have made on Deltarune. For starters, according to Fox, a few more people have already been hired, which is helping to speed things up.
At the same time, though, things are not nearly as close as fans would hope. Because Fox plans to release Chapter 3, 4 and 5 at the same time, everything must be in tip-top shape. Fox said that Chapter 4 development "is going better than ever," and that his team is on track for its internal deadline.
Once that deadline is met, then the team will move toward improving pacing and bugs. It's Fox's hope that by the time the next newsletter comes out, he'll have completed a first pass of Chapter 4 and his team will have moved on to Chapter 5. Even then, Fox can't promise a release date.
"Despite the game making great progress, we can't discuss the release date yet. Even if Chapter 4 is completed smoothly, there may be surprise factors, so we're not at the point where we can make a solid promise."
