If you thought that Fornite was the one true metaverse, then you may want to reevaluate that opinion. Because after adding the likes of Snoop Dogg and Nicki Minaj as well as collaborating with Dune, Attack on Titan, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Call of Duty is now set to crossover with Gundam. Yes, you read that correctly.
The ever-popular mecha franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam, will be making its way into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Season 4 when it launches later this month. How exactly the two will interact remains to be seen, but based on Call of Duty's previous collaborations, we have a few guesses.
The news comes by way of Call of Duty's official Twitter account. Early today, the account posted a teaser for the upcoming collaboration, noting that "It's time for the shadows to rise up."
The teaser isn't much, but there are two key things that are noteworthy. The first is a building that is most likely in Japan, which makes sense since Gundam is a Japanese franchise. The second is the shadow of what appears to be the RX-78-2 Gundam, the first Gundam created and the main focus of the franchise's first anime.
Details are sparse at the moment, but based on how past Call of Duty collaborations have worked, we have a good idea of how things will work in Season 4.
First, it's safe to assume there will be multiple operator skins. Now, the question becomes whether those skins will take after the Gundam suits themselves or after the pilots who use them. Call of Duty is no stranger to turning something from pop culture into an operator, no matter how unbelievable it is.
Take, for example, the Attack on Titan collaboration. The Armored Titan was an actual skin that players could take online. So it wouldn't be too far-fetched if the RX-78-2 was similarly usable. Though, it would be pretty neat to see a Char Aznable skin as well as his iconic Zaku.
