Akira Toriyama, the creator behind the vastly successful Dragon Ball franchise, has passed away age 68.
Toriyama-san was naturally renowned for his work in creating manga series and their anime adaptations – Dragon Ball is his most famous work and a source of inspiration for generations of manga artists that followed, but he first gained recognition for Dr. Slump, and went on to create Sand Land in 2000 – his impact on video games is also keenly felt. Naturally there’s a whole host of Dragon Ball video games, and there’s the upcoming Sand Land game, but he acted as a character designer for games in the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger and Blue Dragon.
His death was confirmed by Bird Studio and Capsule Corporation Tokyo, who shared this (machine translated) message of his passing:

We are deeply saddened to inform you that Manga creator Akira Toriyama passed away on March 1 due to acute subdural hematoma. He was in age of 68.
