As Oscar campaign season continues to roll on, a new report from Variety notes that Netflix has begun distancing itself from Emilia Perez star in the wake of her string of controversial comments that popped up recently.
According to Variety’s report, Gascón was set to make appearances at a litany of award shows this week leading up to the Academy Awards on March 2, 2025, including an AFI Awards luncheon, the Critics Choice Awards, the Directors Guild of America Awards, and the Producers Guild of America Awards, as well a stop at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
However, the report notes that Gascón is now no longer expected to be at any of them, and furthermore, should she want to, Variety reports that Netflix will not be paying for the actress to attend, nor covering any expenses for styling or travel. Instead, Gascón would have to pay for her own travel to the show, and cover her own expenses.
Variety’s report also mentions that Gascón’s public relations firm, The Lede Company, has stopped talking directly to the actress, and are only communicating via her United Talent Agency representative. The controversial statements from Gascón have also thrown doubt over whether or not Emilia Perez will continue to be the favorite that it was going into the Oscars just a few weeks ago.
Earlier this month, past comments from Gascón surfaced, where the actress commented on the murder of George Floyd in 2020, as well as things like the Muslim population in her native Spain, and even commenting on Christopher Columbus and statues of him being taken down in certain places.
