Avernus is a major part of the game's setting as the narrative picks up shortly after the events of the adventure, but only allows players to steal a glimpse at the fiery landscape. It seems like a waste given how important it is to the narrative, so it stands to reason that some users would want to see more.

The actual location looks fantastic as the river of blood and twisted mushrooms truly evokes the idea of the entrance into Hell itself. KatszenBurger notes that the idea behind the map is based on official images of Avernus, but they also took plenty of inspiration from Caelid, a scorched area that plays a major role in FromSoftware's massive RPG .
Given that opens with the Mindflayer Nautiloid crashing out of Avernus, many fans believed they'd have an opportunity to wade back into Hell at some point. Unfortunately, that's not the case but Avernus still features in the story, especially when it comes to Karlach. The Tiefling Barbarian is desperate to escape the hellscape after suffering unimaginable horrors during the Blood War; she ultimately sees the Nautiloid as her one chance to flee her captor Zariel.
Avernus is most commonly depicted as the traditional version of Hell. The largest of The Forgotten Realms' Nine Hells, it's a fiery wasteland filled with demons and monstrosities constantly looking to torment anyone foolish enough to enter their domain. Avernus has served as a staging ground for the aforementioned Blood War, an eons-spanning battle involving Devils and Demons constantly clashing for control.
