While many PlayStation faithful (ourselves included) were initially sceptical of the plucky PS Portal, it has become a strong seller for Sony. The PS5 streaming handheld has reportedly managed to edge out the Midnight Black DualSense, making it the best-selling accessory (in dollar sales) in the U.S. for 2024 year-to-date.
That's according to Mat Piscatela of Circana, formerly NPD, who recently made the jump to Bluesky (thanks, PSLS). Given the device's seemingly limited functionality, many fans and punters predicted that this tentative return to the handheld market would crash and burn. Shockingly, the opposite is rumoured to be true, with the surprise success of the device seemingly spurring Sony to take another look at the lucrative but fickle handheld market.
While hard, fast figures were not forthcoming, Piscatela has previously said some 420,000-630,000 PS Portals have been sold in the U.S. since launch, an attach rate of under 3% of American PS5 owners. With the device continuing to sell out, that means there is still plenty of ceiling for additional sales in the future.
The PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller in Midnight Black was August’s best-selling accessory in dollar sales, while PlayStation Portal remained the best-seller for 2024 year-to-date.
