While you might think that the humble hero shooter (see Overwatch) is starting to feel a bit played out (see Concord), we'd like to posit that's simply because current offerings don't feature enough anime waifus. Audiences today seemingly can't get enough of the colourful Genshin Impact and Zenless Zone Zero. Why should the same concept not apply to the upcoming anime shooter Strinova?
A free-to-play, third-person hero shooter from developer iDreamSky, it boasts a unique «Stringification» mechanic, allowing your character to switch between 2D and 3D versions of themselves. As described by IGN, this can be used to evade the attention of enemies or sneak up from an unexpected angle. The core mode is called Demolition, a 5v5 offering played in rounds, with players issued points to upgrade their character in between. A closed beta is currently in progress for the game, which has been announced for PS5 and is expected to arrive sometime in 2025.
What do you think of Strinova? Do you think its anime aesthetic will ensure a dedicated player base, or is the hero shooter space just being left behind? Let us know in the comments section below.
