It’s spooky season, and Rockstar’s added a new event to its eternally popular GTA Online mode. The game takes you back to the snowy peaks of North Yankton, where the familiar backdrop of the Ludendorff Cemetery has been transformed into a battleground against the undead.
Effectively this is a co-op mode where you need to survive against waves of increasingly challenging enemies. Anyone who gets to Wave 3 will receive a Gray Creepy Cat Mask cosmetic and GTA$100,000 of in-game currency.
But Rockstar also set a community goal: if fans could slay 80 million zombies collectively across all sessions, everyone would receive an Orange Glow Skeleton Onesie and a Red Hooded Skull Mask. That target was smashed within days, with over 200 million reanimated corpses vanquished by 12th October.
So, it’s since upped the ante: slaughter an unfathomable 800 million undead and everyone will also receive a Purple Glow Skeleton Onesie and Green Glow Skeleton Onesie. At last count, fans were about halfway there.
While in-game community activities like this aren’t anything new, it’s a reminder of the enduring popularity of GTA Online. In fact, almost 3 million sessions have been launched in the new mode since it released late last week. That’s absolutely insane for an in-game event in a title that debuted over a decade ago on the PS3!
