The Guardian is a major character in , but this particular figure is shrouded in mystery from the start. After initially picking or creating a character when starting a campaign, it's also necessary to select or customize a Guardian, who will appear in dreams that the protagonist has at various long rests. It can be initially confusing as to why it's necessary to customize what might seem to be a minor character, but the Guardian's role grows significant as progresses, and the ability to choose their appearance ultimately makes sense within lore.
It doesn't take long for the Guardian to make their first appearance in a dream, and it's quickly obvious that their interest in the protagonist is related to the Illithid parasite infecting the minds of all the possible starting party members. What isn't immediately clear is just where the Guardian's allegiances lie, as they're coy about their identity and offer little to back up the idea that they're telling the truth about anything. Eventually, however, it will become necessary to start placing faith in the Guardian or turning away from their advice, which is when getting a clear read on their identity becomes important.
Act 3 contains some explosive revelations, and one of the biggest is the final introduction of the Guardian's true identity. For the first time in the game, the sanctity of camp is interrupted in a major way, with a Githyanki party attacking in the middle of the night and forcing a fight inside the bounds of the camp. Passing through the astral portal that becomes available in camp will take the party to the astral plane, where the Guardian needs assistance in fighting off the Githyanki
