Sony's plans for exclusive live service games are again in turmoil, and fans aren't happy. The latest cancelations involved video games from in-house developers Bend Studios and Bluepoint Games, whose work had yet to be announced before the report of their game's cancelations. Both developers and fans have been left wondering what comes next.
As Sony turned its eyes toward a strategy for live-service PS5 exclusives, the company looked to capitalize on the genre's massive revenue potential and wanted more live-service games based on its popular single-player IP. However, just two new live-service games have materialized: the popular and the now-canceled. Firewalk Studios, the makers of, was also shut down by Sony. This has led to a great deal of confusion among PlayStation's in-house developers, and according to Video Games Chronicle, even employees at Bend Studios and Bluepoint Games were surprised by the news their games were canceled.
VGC spotted a report from video game journalist Jeff Grubb, who claimed that staff from each studio found out about the cancelations at the same time as everyone else. On his Game Mess Mornings video show, Grubb explained that staff went to work the next day unsure what they would be working on next. For Bluepoint Games, it was revealed by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schrier that they were working on a live service spinoff, something fans may have been looking forward to.
PlayStation has only a handful of exclusives coming in 2025, many of which aren’t generating much hype. It’s up to an Xbox exclusive to save it.
