The Dark Angels are the first Space Marine chapter founded by the Emperor and have rituals and traditions that date back to the earliest days of the Imperium of Man. Led by their primarch Lion El'Johnson (a superhuman demigod-like being that serves as the genetic template for the Dark Angels), these Space Marines are known for their secrecy, which extends into the battlefield. The group is also known for its Ravenwing and Deathwing companies, which utilize assault bikes and Terminator armor to quickly dispatch enemies. However, the famed Space Marine chapter carries a terrible secret that defines their true mission.
During the Horus Heresy conflict that nearly ripped the Imperium of Man in two, the Dark Angels remained loyal to the Emperor of Man. However, in the closing days of the great civil war, loyalist Dark Angels learned that some of their members had turned to chaos. The ensuing conflict not only destroyed the Dark Angels' homeworld of Caliban but also led to the near-fatal injury of the Dark Angels' leader Lion'el Johnson. What's more, a number of the corrupted Dark Angels were scattered across space and time by 's Chaos Gods.
