In late January 2023, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Amazon was developing an interconnected Tomb Raider universe made of games, film, and TV.
Today, Amazon MGM Studios has finally announced the TV series, which will premiere exclusively on Prime Video. Actress, screenwriter, and producer Phoebe Waller-Bridge (who won three Primetime Emmys, two Golden Globes, and one BAFTA award for Fleabag) has officially signed on to write and produce. Waller-Bridge said in a statement:
If I could tell my teenage self this was happening, I think she’d explode. Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life, and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all.
Beyond Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the Tomb Raider series will be executive produced by Jenny Robbins through Wells Street Productions, Dmitri M. Johnson through dj2 Entertainment, Michael Scheel, and Legendary Television as well as Crystal Dynamics. Greenblatt and Andolina will be consulting producers under their Star Party banner.
There's no word on the cast yet, which probably means the adaptation is still a while off. Interestingly, Amazon Games also put out a statement through Vice President Christoph Hartmann, who noted that the series and the upcoming new game in development at Crystal Dynamics (with Amazon as the publisher) will have separate stories:
With great IP, the possibilities are endless. The richness and depth of the fiction allows the Tomb Raider series from Prime Video and the video game from Amazon Games to tell separate stories about Lara Croft’s adventures. We’re honored that Crystal Dynamics has entrusted Amazon with this iconic franchise, and we’re looking forward to seeing where this collaboration takes us.
