Maria Hill plays a key role in episode 1. However, viewers will have questions about the fate of Cobie Smulders’ character by the episode’s end. Here’s what we know about whether or not Maria Hill died at the end of episode 1.
At the end of episode 1, Maria Hill has been shot by Nick Fury. However, she doesn’t appear to have yet succumbed to her wounds, meaning she is still alive. While it’s possible that she will still die, it’s not made explicitly clear at the end of the episode.
As we’ve seen in past movies, a character getting wounded but not explicitly killed usually means that they’re going to survive. With Marvel in particular, main characters regularly receive heavy beatings and seemingly lethal blows, only to recover and be back to full strength in a matter of days or months.
Ending on a relatively major character’s death would be quite the dramatic opener for Secret Invasion and should get people talking. However, without any explicit acknowledgment that Cobie Smulders’ character has indeed died and won’t be coming back, I expect her to recover from the gunshot wound.
With all of that said, that gunshot wound could put her out of action for the rest of Secret Invasion. So, while Maria Hill might not die, she may only make limited appearances during the rest of the series.
As Nick Fury is no longer following the orders of the US government, going “AWOL,” the loss of Maria Hill — whether she is dead or just incapacitated — will surely hamper his ability to stop the imminent Skrull invasion.
