The character at the center of Marvel’s Secret Invasion is none other than. After being in numerous movies and series as a side-character, the Disney+ series is putting Nick Fury front and center. Here’s Fury’s history in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Nick Fury first appeared in the post-credits scene of 2008’s Iron Man. Many of his early appearances were to set up the idea of the Avengers, with Fury operating in the shadows as the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. — the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. In 2012’s The Avengers, Fury got to shine a bit, keeping the team of superheroes together while dealing with the higher governmental powers.
In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, S.H.I.E.L.D. is revealed to be full of HYDRA figures that have corrupted the organization from within over the years. Fury battles a number of enemy agents while working alongside Captain America, Black Widow, and Maria Hill, and eventually fakes his own death at the end of the movie. From there, Fury sporadically appears in later Avengers movies, motivating the team in Avengers: Age of Ultron and being snapped away by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.
Captain Marvel, which takes place in 1995, shows a younger Nick Fury meeting the titular hero and the Skrulls for the first time. This is where he meets Talos, who also plays a major role in Secret Invasion. By the time of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Fury was brought back to life by the Avengers and has for some reason gone to space as Talos impersonates him at his own request. It’s likely that Secret Invasion and The Marvels will explain this intergalactic sabbatical while continuing Fury’s story.
