Longtime Resident Evil protagonist Leon Kennedy will reportedly return for the ninth instalment in the series. Multiple leakers claim that Leon will once again be a main character, and at this point in the story, will be 48 years old.
One of the leakers behind this claim is Dusk Golem, who commented on this in his Discord server. It's also being claimed by the Twitter account @PRE_Alarabiya, which goes into more detail about these leaks. Here, they state that they've only heard about Leon being playable in Resident Evil 9's opening, so it's possible that other characters will take the lead elsewhere in the story.
In the tweet above, @PRE_Alarabiya - also known as Resident Evil Philosophers, claims to have spoken to a source with information on Resident Evil 9. This source stated that Leon was playable at the beginning of Resident Evil 9 and that the story will take place in the summer of 2025. This would make Leon 48 years old, so it remains to be seen if he gets a wild plot explanation for not ageing like Jill has.
Dusk Golem, who recently claimed that Resident Evil 9 is set on an island, is also supporting the rumour that Leon is a playable character. On top of this, he's previously indicated that it will be an open-world game, which would fit in with the rumoured island setting.
Of course, none of this is official. Capcom hasn't even announced Resident Evil 9 just yet, but given that the last game was a remake, we can expect to get news of another mainline entry sooner rather than later.
With that said, it's also being reported that Capcom has yet another Resident Evil remake in the works. Multiple leakers claim that a remake of the first Resident Evil game is in development now, scheduled to release in 2026. This would coincide with the original game's 30th anniversary, so it would be a fitting way to mark the occasion.
